Identifying your child’s academic talents and weaknesses will help them reach their full potential in school. MARS Memory-Health Network provides formal testing to identify your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses.

Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities (LDs) are disorders that affect a child’s ability to understand or use language, do math, coordinate movements, or direct attention. LDs are not related to intelligence and more common than most people think. In fact, about 1 in 10 public-school students have LDs. Happily, LDs can be managed with behavioral interventions and coping skills, such as an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 plan. IEP/504s are types of academic accommodation in which schools tailor teaching and testing protocols to your child’s strengths.

One of the most common LD is Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is most commonly diagnosed around age 7 but can be diagnosed at any age. You might recognize ADHD in your child by their inattention and impulsivity, underperformance in school, commonly getting in trouble with teachers and parents, and difficulty following rules, among other behaviors. Treatment includes both medication and therapy.

Academic Giftedness

Many children have special academic talents that need to be identified in order for them to reach their full potential in school. In fact, some students struggle in school or demonstrate behavioral problems because the standard curriculum is not sufficiently challenging to keep them engaged.

Formal testing provides an objective and systematic approach for identifying gifted and talented children. Many schools have established benchmark scores on these tests that are needed to enroll a child into gifted programming or advanced classes. Importantly, these tests represent one part of a gifted assessment, and are combined with other information in order to more accurately characterize your child.

If you believe your child is a candidate for giftedness, please contact MARS Memory-Health Network to schedule an evaluation.
